The Debby Malloy Winkler
Memorial Thoroughbred Division
SAVE THE DATE: May 7, 2017
for our Fourth Annual
Debby Malloy Winkler Thoroughbred Division
I currently sponsor a three class division every spring at Old Salem Farm's Welcome Day Horse Show for Thoroughbreds who are registered by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.). There are two 3' over fences and an under saddle class. Points will count toward a year end High Score Award. I have provided a Perpetual Trophy which was won by Debby in one of her International Competitions in Europe.
Making it Perpetual means a smaller trophy will be given away each year, but the Perpetual Trophy will remain on display at Old Salem Farm with each year's champion's name inscribed.
My daughter, Debby rode many Thoroughbreds when she was competing. It is most fitting that I honor her memory by offering this Division in her name. After pushing around the Warmbloods all day, she told me she would save one of the Thoroughbreds for the end of the day. She called them her "dessert". As she put it, they were always in "high idle”. It was the most enjoyable time of her riding day.For those unaware, Debby fell so tragically at her home walking her horse after some flat work. With all the tremendous falls that every rider experiences during a lifetime of riding, it is unimaginable that this one was fatal. The horse broke her neck too.
I encourage people to give a race horse another chance to be useful and give enjoyment after racing. I appreciate all those who have participated in the past years and am hoping to continue to build it even bigger. During the Debby Malloy Winkler Thoroughbred Division at Old Salem Farm, the horse will be identified in the program by its present name, but also by its Jockey Club Registered name. There is a lot behind a Thoroughbred's racing name - breeding and bloodlines, which are very interesting and a helpful piece of information to anyone wondering about where they came from and how their family (bloodlines) have evolved.
I know we can make the lives of ex race horses useful and show the world their wonderful qualities and yes, beauty.
Debby would approve. I can hear her say, " Go for it Mom"!
